PackAhead: bringing AI and digitalisation into the circular bioeconomy

We are excited to announce the launch of PackAhead, a new Horizon Europe project exploring how AI and digitalisation can accelerate the transition towards sustainable, bio-based packaging.

Over the next four years, 14 partners from 9 countries will combine AI, digitalisation, synthetic biology and bio-based materials to develop high-performance regenerated cellulose films for flexible food packaging.

PackAhead will use AI-driven enzyme design, digital twins, machine learning and advanced modelling to optimise production, while AI-powered identification and sorting will support improved recycling. The solutions will be demonstrated at TRL 7, paving the way towards industrial deployment.

But the ambition goes beyond packaging: PackAhead will demonstrate how trustworthy AI and digital tools can transform bio-based value chains and support their uptake across other bio-based industries.

The project officially kicks off in September 2026, with the consortium meeting in Helsinki on 8 September.
